In today's article, I'm going to walk you through everything you need to know before starting Odin: Valhalla Rising. This is especially important if you're new to MMO RPGs. So, even if you're just curious about the game, stick around. This will help you avoid common early mistakes and get a smoother start.
First off, let's talk about something many mobile gamers are used to: R-rolling. In Odin, re-rolling is not recommended. Unlike many gacha-based games where re-rolling for better initial draws is standard practice, Odin places a much bigger emphasis on long-term progression. The sooner you start playing and building up your character, the better off you'll be. So, don't waste your time trying to roll for perfect gear. Just jump in and play.
Before you even create your character, you'll need to choose a server. This is super important because Odin doesn't allow cross-server play. If you want to play with friends, family, or guildmates, you all need to create your characters on the same server. So, be sure to coordinate with your group ahead of time.
Once your server is set, the next big decision is your class. Odin offers four first-tier classes: Warrior, Sorceress, Rogue, and Priest. Each has its own unique play style and strengths, and keep in mind, you can't change your class later. However, you can create up to three characters on a single server, even as a free-to-play player. So feel free to experiment a bit and choose what suits your style best.
After creating your character, your first goal is to progress through the main quest line. This serves as both your tutorial and your early leveling system. Odin makes it easy with a quest button that auto-initiates dialogue and even activates auto combat. It's beginner-friendly and lets you focus on learning the basics without being overwhelmed.
Speaking of auto combat, this is a key feature in Odin. It allows your character to fight monsters automatically, even farming experience and loot while you step away to study, cook, or just relax. To make the most of this, you should enable no kill steal mode. This prevents your character from stealing monsters other players are already attacking, which can cause unnecessary conflict or even trigger PvP later on. Always keep it on unless you're having trouble progressing a quest due to crowded areas. In that case, it's okay to turn it off briefly just to move past a bottleneck.
Don't forget about consumable items, especially health potions. You can buy HP potions and buffs from general merchants in villages. These boost your combat performance and survivability significantly, so always keep a healthy stock. For example, HP potions should be stocked to their max limit, and buffs that enhance attack, defense, or regen should be carried in batches of 5 to 10.
Once you have items, set them to your quick slots. These are the slots located at the bottom center of your screen. Swiping down activates them, and certain items, like potions, will be used automatically when needed, so you don't need to worry about those during fights. Always keep an eye on your potion supply. If you run out during a tough battle, you risk dying before you can make it back to a safe zone. Early on, it's better to head back to town for resupply when you're running low rather than taking the risk. You can even set up notifications to alert you when your HP or potion count gets low. Super useful if you're not paying close attention.
Once you're comfortable with the basics, it's time to start leveling and strengthening your character. Your main source of growth early on is just gaining levels. Not only does this increase your stats, but it also unlocks key game systems and lets you learn new skills. At the beginning, just following the main quest line is enough to level efficiently. Odin also features a fantastic idle mode called AFK mode. It lets your character continue farming even while the game is closed, up to 8 hours a day. This is perfect for when you're commuting, sleeping, or just busy.
When you're ready, you'll want to upgrade your gear. Most equipment in the beginning is of normal grade. Your first target should be collecting high-grade gear. These offer much better stats and can be enhanced for even more power. You'll need enhancement stones and gold to do this. However, don't push past the safe enhancement value. Gear can be destroyed if enhancement fails beyond that point. Play it safe until you're more experienced and have extra gear to fall back on.
Once you've saved up enough gold, start purchasing skills. Skills improve your effectiveness in battle and offer important boosts depending on your class, whether that's extra damage, healing, or utility. Just make sure your character meets the level requirements for each skill before buying.
Eventually, you'll aim to clear the main quest line in Midgard. Completing this unlocks access to the next region, Jotenheim, and opens up new content. This is your first major milestone in the game and should be one of your early goals.
Another highly recommended step is joining a guild. Guilds offer social interaction, group content, and passive bonuses that can make a big difference. Even if you don't plan on being super active socially, just joining any guild can help. The guild feature unlocks once you complete chapter 4, quest 19 in the main story. Guilds also come with benefits like buffs based on guild level, and you can earn guild coins through donations. These coins can be exchanged for powerful gear later on, including epic grade armor. The more you contribute by logging in, completing quests, or donating, the more you and your guild benefit.
That's it for today's guide on how to start strong in Odin. I hope this helps you build a smoother, more efficient foundation as you begin your adventure.
